Cut chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. Prepare a marinade by mixing sugar, ginger, sake, mirin and soy sauce. Marinade the chicken for an hour or so in the fridge. Cut the onions into 1 inch lengths. Skewer the marinaded chicken and onions in alternating order. Grill the skewered chicken over hot coals, basting with marinade until the chicken is cooked.
